Russell, John

John Joseph “Rusty” Russell, Jr., age 63, of Wilmington, Delaware, passed away on September 15, 2020, of natural causes. John was born in Wilmington, Delaware, the son of Mary J. Schofield Green Russell and John J. Russell, Sr., both deceased.

One of John’s proudest achievements was earning an associate degree from Delaware Technical Community College in Applied Science for Human Services, specializing in drug and alcohol counseling. He enjoyed his most recent employment experience at Congregation Beth Shalom in Wilmington. He also was proud of being an election poll worker in the past few years and regretted not being able to do that in 2020, due to the coronavirus. He also served as an overnight worker in Friendship House’s overnight shelter for homeless men. John was a member of Hanover Presbyterian Church and formerly West Presbyterian Church, both in Wilmington, Delaware. He was very spiritual and active in the church, most recently serving as a Deacon and on the nominating committee.

The thing that brought John the most joy was his family; those he grew up with and those he met after his beloved mother died. He treasured every moment spent with them. He was the bridge that brought family together. He was a sweet and gentle soul.

John also got great pleasure singing with his Rainbow Chorale of Delaware family. He enjoyed the practices, the events, and the comradery of the group. He was looking forward to singing again as soon as the COVID-19 restrictions were lifted. John relished the time spent at Kirkridge Retreat and Study Center in Bangor, PA. He was also crazy about 80’s music, Dr. Who, musicals, and Aubrey Plaza of Legion, whom he was proud to have met. John is survived by his brother, David (wife Kimberly) of Middletown, his niece Shannon, his nephew David Jr., and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

The family would like to thank Reverend Andrew Jacob and Ellen Casson for their kindness and help during this time. Donations to Hanover Presbyterian Church, Wilmington, DE, are welcomed as an expression of sympathy instead of flowers.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, October 3rd, at Hanover Presbyterian Church, 1801 N Jefferson St, Wilmington, DE, with burial immediately following at Chester Bethel Cemetery.
