Joseph Anthony McDevitt age 95, of Wilmington, DE, passed away peacefully at home on Friday April 17, 2020 surrounded by family.
Born in Philadelphia, PA on September 19, 1924, Joe was one of four children born to the late James and Elizabeth (Keegan) McDevitt. Joe was a graduate of John Bartram High School. Following high school, he proudly served in the US Navy during World War II and the Korean War. Notably he served in the Atlantic and Pacific theaters and he was on board the USS Ticonderoga off the coast of Japan when the treaty was signed ending the war. He attended St. Joseph’s University and went on to make his career at the General Electric Company in Philadelphia. He was President of the Quarter Century Club, Rice Club and the GE Management Association. He was the only person to be elected President of all three associations.
Joe worked as an Electrical Engineer for 40 years until his retirement in 1987. Following his retirement from General Electric, he worked as a consultant for Pacific Gas & Electric. He also worked his “all time favorite job” as a banquet bartender for the Alpine Inn, September’s Place and Paxon Hollow Country Club until his second retirement at the age of 88. He was an Irish bartender who never drank.
Joe loved his family and friends unconditionally and was the patriarch of the family. He was a devout Catholic and could be found in mass every Sunday at Church of the Holy Child, most recently sitting near his friend Earl. Joe was a kind and selfless man with great wit, wonderful sense of humor, always quick to smile and share a story. He enjoyed coaching women’s softball, watching sports, reading books, going on trips to the casino, lunching with the WWII gentlemen, his monthly GE retirees’ meeting at the Erin Pub and munching on Pepperidge Farm Cheddar Goldfish, a favorite snack. He was always happiest when surrounded by his family and friends.
Joe will be dearly missed by his daughters and son-in-laws, Marge (Nick) Fuhs, Fran (Frank) Romano, Christine (Chad) Dunn; grandchildren, Nick (Susan) Fuhs, Heather and Beth Fuhs, Colin and Cayley Dunn; great grandchildren, Aidan and Erin Fuhs; Frank Keegan (cousin but truly a younger brother), nieces and nephews, grand dogs/cats, great grand dogs and extended family. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 46 years, Charlotte and the surviving member of his siblings James McDevitt, Elizabeth Tanaiewski and Francis McDevitt.
The family would like to extend special thanks to Dr. David Maleh and Sarah Munden, RN for the excellent care and kindness they extended to our father and family. Also, heartfelt appreciation for Joe’s neighbors, Jack and Alice Flynn, for their love and friendship over the years.
A private service with burial at Delaware Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery, Bear, DE will be held. The family will hold a mass and celebration of Joe’s life scheduled at a later date due to the current Covid 19 restrictions. In lieu of flowers the family suggests that donations be made to: Special Olympics Delaware or St. Francis Healthcare in his memory.
