Gibson, D. J.

WILMINGTON – D.J. Gibson, of Wilmington, DE, passed away peacefully on August 21, 2019 as she had lived, with strong faith in God’s plan, an unshakeable love and commitment to family and a deep affection for her friends.

D.J. was born in Charleston, WV and was a proud West Virginia University (WVU) graduate, where many of her life-long friendships were nurtured. She worked for Union Carbide in West Virginia when she married H. Robert Gibson. Soon thereafter, D.J. moved to Columbus, OH to raise her family of whom she is very proud. More than 40 years ago, D.J. and Bob settled in Wilmington, DE, making numerous lasting and meaningful friendships. Those who met D.J. were deeply affected by her boundless energy that defined her strong, focused work ethic, her caring, selfless commitment to service and her love for friends and family. She was a kind, loving and dedicated sister, wife, mother, aunt, grandmother, and friend. Her grandchildren will always have a very special place in her heart.

D.J. was actively involved in community, church, leadership and volunteer positions. She particularly enjoyed singing with Silverside Church choir and performing with The Brandywiners, being a camp counselor, a proud Girl Scout life member and leader. She always found time to drive to swim meets, create great meals for family gatherings, decorate for the holidays, make lemon bars and pecan cups and share her talents to complete a wide array of artistic projects including her well known painted Christmas windows, church banners and seasonal pool frogs.

D.J. was also an active, long time member of Silverside Church. She believed in community service and service to God, commitment to the needs of others and educational opportunity. She was particularly proud of WVU Scholarship development for students, her lifelong Kappa Delta & PEO sisterhoods, also known for scholastic opportunity development.

In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by her husband Bob and her sister, Pauline Hammock. She is survived by her children and their spouses Robin Katz (Steve) of Canoga Park, CA; Lisa Frankel (Al) of Middletown, DE; Taylor “Tag” Gibson (Liz) of San Marcos, CA; and Claire Braun (Gordon) of Norfolk, NE; six grandchildren Bret Katz, Bethany Frankel, Devon Gibson, Brooke Gibson, Heather Braun and Dylan Braun; two brothers-in-law Bill and John Gibson, niece Nancy Riley and nephew John Parkinson and numerous close friends.

A Celebration of Life Memorial service is planned for Thursday, Oct. 10th at 2:00pm and held at Silverside Church, 2800 Silverside Road, Wilmington DE. A reception will follow at the church.
