Fernanda Medeiros DeLacerda, age 82, passed away peacefully February 15, 2020, at home, surrounded by her family. She was born June 3, 1937 in Horta, Faial, in the Azores Islands, to Manuel and Ester. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Eduardo, her son Edward, sister Maria, and brothers Manuel Jr. and Ludgero.
Prior to emigrating to the United States in 1959, she gained renown in Faial for her singing talents, performing publicly with the “Sem Rei Nem Roque” orchestra.
Fernanda was known to her nieces, nephews, and grandnieces and grandnephews as “Tia Nana”, or simply “Nana”, who remember her as a second mother who cared for them during afterschool and summers, and well into adulthood. She was an avid fan of the New York Islanders, and together with her sister Maria, could be found loudly & proudly cheering her great-niece’s teams at many soccer tournaments over the years.
Nana could often be found tending to her gardens, full of hydrangeas that brought memories of her childhood on the “blue island” of Faial. She was also known for her culinary talents, especially when it came to dessert.
