David Sheppard Rice of Newark, DE passed away at home on September 11, 2019 at the age of 79. He was born in Somerville, NJ on December 27, 1939 to the late Dale and Gladys (Githens) Rice, and is survived by his wife of 51 years, Victoria (Cusatis) Rice, his daughter Patricia, his son and daughter-in-law George and Carol, and his granddaughter Maria Rice.
David graduated from P.S. DuPont high school in 1957, where he was the Delaware state indoor swimming champion in the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke, breaking records in each event that had stood since 1931. He served in the Coast Guard reserves (resulting in a lifelong dislike of Jello) and retired from Hercules after 27 years after which he worked at Basell for several years. Dave was an avid hunter and fisherman, shot trap and skeet (2 year running Delaware State skeet shooting champion), taught hunter safety courses for over 25 years, and taught fly tying classes. He was active in the church, where he served on the church council, the board of directors for kindergarten, and was Sunday school secretary.
Many thanks go out to Compassionate Care Hospice who helped to care for him over the last weeks of his life.
