Betty Stewart Harrington passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of Tuesday, December 18, 2018 at the age of 94. She struggled to resist the progressive effects of Alzheimers disease and dementia, but could always manage a smile for her visitors. She had been a resident at the Summit Retirement Community, Memory Care Division, for the past four years.
Betty grew up in the Brack-Ex area of Elsmere, one of five children of Zilpah and Leon Stewart, who predeceased her. Her first husband of 48 years, Herbert M. Harrington, Sr. died in 1992. Her second husband, Walter D. Ward, died in 2014.
Betty was a graduate of A I DuPont High School, class of 1942. She enjoyed traveling, theatre, crafts, and reading non-fiction books. She was a member of Hockessin United Methodist Church. Physical fitness was important to Betty, and she was one of the first members of Hockessin Athletic Club. The majority of her working years were spent at WHYY-TV12 at the 5th and Scott Streets location, where (according to her) she ran the entire operation as the Office Manager.
Betty is survived by two sons, Herbert (Skip) M Jr, and Keith S., both of Wilmington. She was predeceased by her son Richard C. in addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brother Charles (Doc) and her sister Doris. She is survived by her sister Marion Lynam and her brother Richard Stewart and his wife Barbara, who faithfully visited Betty every week. Betty is also survived by two grandsons, Richard and Cody, and three great grandchildren, Ethan, Colin and Paityn.
A service will be held on Friday, December 21, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at the McCrery & Harra Funeral Home, 3710 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, DE 19808 where friends may call from 10:00-11:00 a.m. Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery immediately following.
