It is with extreme sadness that we announce the passing of Laura Vaughn Frederick Pudvan, of Wilmington, DE, at age 86, on Wednesday, May 8, 2019. She was surrounded by her loving family.
Laura was born in Moosic, PA, moved to Northeast Philadelphia, then to Brack Ex where she graduated from Conrad High School. She was the youngest daughter of Alexander and Leona Frederick. Laura was born between her older sisters Martha and Mary, and her younger brother, Alexander (Bud). After she met Bill, they started their family on West Third Street in Old New Castle, then moved into a new house in Prices Corner, where they lived the rest of their lives.
She was an avid bowler, having bowled in numerous leagues and helping to run several of them. She was a professional pinochle player with friends many weekends, always with the girls winning one more hand than the guys. Back in the day she was a pool shark, capable of running the table at any time. Laura enjoyed creating memories with her family at her summer homes. If you were looking for that hard to find item, Laura would be on a mission scouring yard sales for that gem. Recently, she enjoyed going to her monthly family and bowling luncheons. She also liked watching soap operas, game shows, Survivor and her Philadelphia sports: Flyers, Phillies, and Eagles. Most of all she loved being with her family. She looked forward to every milestone in her grandchildrens lives. Most grandmothers have a brag book, but Laura had an Encyclopedia Britannicaall of you under age 35, google that. All of you over 65, ask your kids what google that means.
Laura retired from Farmers Mutual Insurance Company after thirty-two years of dedicated service. Many of her closest friends were among the coworkers that she had the pleasure of working with. After retiring, Laura was heavily involved in supporting the widows for Masonic Lodge Ionic #31. She loved going to her church, Christ United Methodist, in Elsmere.
She was preceded in death by her father and mother Alexander and Leona Frederick of Brack-Ex; her devoted husband William (Bill) of Wilmington; sister Martha Berkheiser of Townsend; and brother, Alexander Earl (Bud) Frederick of Wilmington. She is survived by children W. David Pudvan and Lynn of Newark, Teri Paulman and Skip of Newark, and Robert Pudvan and Lucy of Leawood, Kansas. Laura had four beautiful grandchildren that brought her great joy; Jared and Rikki Lyn Pudvan of Oceanside, CA, Craig and Tara Pudvan of Levittown, PA, Lauren Pudvan attending Olin College of Engineering in Needham, MA, and Alexis Pudvan attending University of Oklahoma in Norman, OK; sister Mary Sowden of Elsmere, DE. Laura was expecting to become a great grandmother in August of this year.
Our family does not use the words in-laws. Laura was endeared by her extended families and to all of you we will be forever grateful.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 14, from 7 to 9 pm at McCrery Harra Funeral Home located at 3710 Kirkwood HWY. Additional visitations will be held Wednesday, May 15, from 10 to 11 am with services immediately following. She will be laid to rest at Gracelawn Memorial Park following the services.
Laura will be remembered for her kindness, thoughtfulness and generosity. She never missed a birthday. She donated to many diverse and worthy causes. She was very passionate about the sustainability of the Christ United Methodist Church, of which her family was a charter member and where three generations of her family were married. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial gifts be made to the Christ United Methodist Church at gofundme.com
