Wilmington - Allen H. Kemp, 84, of Forwood Manor, died of respiratory failure Jan. 1, 2019 in Wilmington Hospital.
Mr. Kemp was an executive vice president with Rollins Leasing Corp. for many years, having been recruited by the late John Rollins Sr. in Georgia, where he began his sales career selling Bibles and appliances door-to-door. He later sold tires for Goodyear and leased trucks for Ryder before joining Rollins in 1976 and relocating to Delaware.
In the early 1990s he formed the tax watchdog group Citizens for Fair School Taxes, which advocated for transparency in public school financing in the Brandywine School District and statewide.
In recent years, Mr. Kemp became a familiar figure at Forwood Manor, where he settled into the independent living wing in 2014. He organized and helped equip regular BINGO games and Texas Hold Em nights. He could often be seen dashing around on his red electric scooter, taking part in community functions or schmoozing with the Forwood management.
He is predeceased by his wife, the former Betty Ann Mulcay, who died in 2003, and a brother Roger Kemp, who died as a young man.
Mr. Kemp is survived by a daughter, Sharon Johnson of Easton, Pa.; a son, Al Kemp of Seattle; a brother, Donald Kemp of Marietta, GA; and grandchildren Katharine Tillman, Wayne Johnson, Daniel Kemp and Cassidy Damiani; and a great-granddaughter Flannery Shacham.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Jan. 5 in the main parlor at Forwood Manor, 1912 Marsh Road, Wilmington. Interment will be in Augusta, GA.
