New Castle- Doris May Guessford, age 93, passed away at her residence on December 28, 2018.
She was born in Wilmington, DE to the late Foster and Mabel Guessford. Doris graduated from Wilmington HS in 1944, where she received the American Legion Award. She also was the lead in the musical, Pirates of Penzance. Doris was noticed by The Brandywiners and successfully auditioned for the group. She performed in several of their productions as her mother worked in the costume committee. Doris also attended the University of Delaware.
Starting out dancing at the age of three, she developed in to an accomplished dancer. When she suffered foot problems, Doris became primarily a singer. She sang at weddings, radio shows, including WAMS and stations in Philadelphia. While in Philadelphia she studied with the Marguerite Barr McClaine.
After high school she went to work for the former Atlas Powder Co. at 9th & Market Sts. During this time, WWII erupted, and she was busy entertaining the troops at Aberdeen Perry Point and New Castle Air Base. Doris also worked for the families of Mrs. E. Paul duPont and Willing Bayard Foulke, Automotive Imports, Wilmington Trust and was also a real estate agent.
Doris dearly loved children and was a regular contributor to her favorite charities: St. Jude Children’s Hospital, Boystown, and the St. Labre Indian School. Also an ardent cat lover, she provided food and shelter for many neighborhood strays for several years. Her special companion pets, Princess and Tigger, survive her.
Doris is also preceded in death by her brother, Ronald Guessford.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, January 29, at 11am, at McCrery & Harra Funeral Homes, 3710 Kirkwood Hwy, Wilmington, where friends may call after 10am. Burial will be held in Silverbrook Cemetery.
