Betty R. Edwards
Our Mom, age 84, died gently on November 13th after fighting a battle with COPD.
She was born in Whitehead, NC and moved to Delaware in the mid-50s .This independent spirit who never saw a problem that she didn’t want to solve or fix, never stopped believing that she could win. Over her life she helped build a construction company from scratch and taught herself the financial side of the business. When times changed, she became fascinated with computers and electronics, becoming the resident family IT department and chronicling family events and history with her ever-present video camera. She never forgot a birthday, anniversary or holiday, making her own cards on the computer. When her great-grandchildren were too young to read, she added their picture to the card and her own picture so they knew it was for them and it was from Mom-Mom.
Mom worked at Hurlock Roofing and Silverbrook Cemetery in Wilmington before moving back to Sparta, NC and there worked in her sister Faye Reeves’ store. Five years ago, she returned to Delaware to be closer to her growing family.
Mom was preceded in death by her grandson Jeff Walker, her brother Earl Richardson and her sister Hazel Pugh. She is survived by her sister Faye Reeves of Sparta, NC and brother Paul Richardson of Old Fort, NC; her daughter Christine Gourley of Wilmington, DE and her son Dennis Edwards of Middletown, DE; her grandchildren: Kelly Collins, Beth Walker, Melanie Zurzolo and Heather Mullen; great-grandchildren: Tyler and Kaitlyn Collins, Isabella and Riley Zurzolo, Makenzie and Hunter Mullen.
Mom wished to have her ashes buried with her grandson Jeff in All Saints Cemetery on Friday with just the immediate family.
A memorial gathering will be held from 7-8 pm on Monday, November 22, 2010 at the MCCRERY MEMORIAL CHAPEL, Kirkwood Highway and Duncan Road.
In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to Delaware Hospice, 3515 Silverside Rd, Ste 100, Wilmington, DE 19810 or online at for their kindness and gentle, very real support for families during heartaches like these.
