MICHAEL CENTRELLA

Dr. Michael L. Centrella, Jr.
Age 58, Michael Centrella, born and raised in Wilmington, DE passed away Thursday, February 4, 2010, surrounded by his family, after a courageous two year battle with a malignant brain tumor.

Dr. Centrella was born in 1952, son of the late Dr. and Mrs. Michael L. Centrella, Sr. (Florence Calvarese). Michael graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School in 1970. While attending the University of Delaware, he was a Pledge Captain and a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity. In 1976, Michael earned his Doctor of Podiatric Medicine degree from Temple University. He then took over his father’s practice in 1980 and continued working up until his retirement in March of 2008.

During his many years of practice, he served as a Member of Active Staff at Riverside and St. Francis Hospitals and Christiana Care Health Systems of Delaware. He was a Past Secretary and President, as well as, a Member of the Peer Review Committee of the Podiatry Society of Delaware from 1979-1987. He was a Director of the Podiatric Surgical Residency Program at Riverside Hospital from 1988-1994 and served as a Vice President of the Delaware Podiatric Medical Association.

Dr. Centrella will be remembered for the excellent care he provided his patients, the deep concern he had for their ailments and his wonderful bedside manner. He will be missed by his long time staff at his Gilpin Avenue office and his many Hospital and Podiatry friends in Delaware and Pennsylvania.

Michael had a love for configuring numbers, especially working through mathematical equations. He had a keen memory for family and friend’s birthdays and anniversaries. He enjoyed his many cars throughout the years, especially his beloved 1957 Corvette. He was an avid Elvis Presley and “oldies” music fan. During the football season, Michael could always be seen at the University of Delaware games cheering on his favorite team, The Blue Hens. He also enjoyed playing tennis and going to his vacation home in Fenwick Island, Delaware with family and friends.

Special thanks to those who cared for Michael and visited him during his illness. His family is deeply appreciative.

Michael will be missed by his two daughters, Michele, and her husband, Robert Harra III, and Meredith; his two sisters, Micki, and her husband, Dr. Robert Altschuler, and Melody, and her husband, James Owen, Esq.; and his brother, Dana Centrella, and his wife, Jody. Dr. Centrella also leaves behind his granddaughter, Brinton Harra, and twelve nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother, Dr. Louis Centrella, who is survived by his wife, Henia.

A gathering to celebrate Michael’s life will be held on Monday, February 8, 2010 from 6-8pm at the McCRERY MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME, 3924 Concord Pike (Rt. 202, S. of Silverside Rd.), Wilmington, DE 19803. Overflow parking will be available at the YMCA off Mt. Lebanon Rd. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered the following day at 10:30am at St. Joseph’s on the Brandywine Catholic Church, 10 Old Church Road, Greenville, Delaware. Entombment will be private.
